What The Hell is Good Design? Well, that’s a loaded question. Webster’s defines… jesus no. Well, what’s bad design? What is design? Design is the fabric of the world as we know it. It’s how we get from point A to point B, how we interact with the environment around us. Your entire life has been designed, whether it be by you or the societal systems around you.
Throughout human history, big and small thinkers alike have crafted the world we see today. We hop into safety-assured vehicles that connect to our pocket computers that adapt more and more to our needs every passing year. We drive across highways that are mapped out to suit the environments they reside in, while maximizing the efficiency of the area’s flow of traffic. Even your favorite lunch spot has been zoned, inspected, branded, and marketed to attract the young, hurried consumer who needs a quick bite before a big presentation but is trying to eat a bit healthier because they just don’t have as much time to go to the gym as they used to.
Our world is steeped in design and design-thinking. Design is the cross section between strategy and art, function and functionality; and good design is the equalized consideration of both sides. Without strategy, creativity can become an endless cycle of addition and revision, without a targeted end goal. Without art, we end up with something like the Tesla Cybertruck.
The world has come a long way in the past 2023 years (is that right?) – and we still have a long way to go. Improvement happens every day, but we can achieve better and more beautiful results when we invest time and resources into championing creativity, critical thinking, and balance. The real question isn’t “what is good design” but rather, how do we continue to leverage good design to create a better world?
